About: Oysterhead is a rock supergroup featuring guitarist Trey Anastasio of Phish, bassist Les Claypool of Primus, and drummer Stewart Copeland of The Police. The style and sound of the band is a unique, somewhat bizarre mix between Anastasio’s jam band style, the bass-oriented funk metal music of Claypool, and the reggae-influenced beats of Copeland. To many, this is considered to be the bridge between the music of Phish and Primus.

Oysterhead was formed for what was originally intended to be an exclusive one-off live performance at New Orleans’s Saenger Theater on May 4, 2000, for which they compiled a set almost entirely of original material. About: Leslie Edward “Les” Claypool is a singer, lyricist, bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer, best known for his work with the alternative rock band Primus. Claypool’s mastery of the electric bass has brought him into the spotlight with his funky, creative playing style. Claypool mixes finger-tapping, flamenco-like strumming, and a Larry Graham-like slap technique to develop his own unique style and has earned respect as one of rock’s premier bass talents, becoming an influence for younger bassists in recent years.

About: The Aquarium Rescue Unit’s ever-rotating lineup became a fixture on the early jam band scene, eventually spawning members of the Allman Brothers Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Leftover Salmon, and Frogwings. The band’s fun fusion of bluegrass, rock, Latin, jazz, and impeccable chops became a template for much future work in the genre.

Growing out of a weekly Atlanta jam session hosted by the legendary Col. Bruce Hampton, the Aquarium Rescue Unit performed around their native Southeast with a rotating lineup before settling on the group that would be heard on their two Capricorn Records releases in 1991 and 1993, respectively.

After recording their self-titled live debut in 1991, the band embarked on the first two H.O.R.D.E. tours during the summers of 1992 and 1993, where they found musical compatriots with bands like Phish, Blues Traveler, the Spin Doctors, and fellow Georgians Widespread Panic. Cross-pollination was frequent, with members of the Unit and other bands frequently appearing on-stage or in the studio with their tourmates.

Edie Brickell & New Bohemians is a jam band that originated in Texas in the mid-1980s. The band is best known for their 1988 hit “What I Am” from the album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars. Combining elements of rock and folk, their sound has been compared to R.E.M., another Southern college radio band of the same era. After their 1990 second album Ghost of a Dog, lead singer Edie Brickell married singer-songwriter Paul Simon after leaving the band.
