I wanted to take a second and write about my least favorite concert venue. Not that I want to kill the fun and good times vibe around here, but I figure we have to look at the underbelly once and awhile.

So without further adieu, my least favorite concert venue.

Darien Lake-

Formerly a Six Flags theme park, Darien Lake is the the worst concert venue I have ever set foot into.

It is the prime spot for summer music stops for Western, NY because well it is really the only option. Buffalo has large sporting venues, which are too big for most bands, Canandiagua has a performing arts center as well but it is in Canandiagua, not exactly convenient for anyone to get to. (Not like Darien Lake is, but it is at least situated between Buffalo and Rochester.)

I have gone to concerts on the lawn and in the seats, the acoustics are horrible, the traffic flow is bad, the tailgating is good, but there isn’t enough alcohol in the world to make up for the general problems this place has.

Mix in the smell of theme park water, and a horrible layout for a venue, you get the one place I fight tool and nail against going to.

With the evolution of High Falls in Rochester and different concert series in the Square in Buffalo, I hope that Darien begins a slow fade into the background.

What is your least favorite concert venue?

Technorati Tags: least favorie concert venues, darien lake, Buffalo, Rochester

Post from: Jam Band News

My Favorite Concert Venues- Number 1

Concert Venues

With the summer music season in full swing, I was discussing with my friends what our favorite venues were. Our discussion ran the gamut from stadiums to amphitheaters to small clubs, with everyone chiming in on what they liked and why.

I figured that I would share a few of my favorites and have you share a few of yours. To give this some sort of build up I decided to do it top five style here were the previous four:

5) The House of Blues (Hollywood)
4) Wiltern Theatre
3) Water Street Music Hall
2) Santa Barbara Bowl

and now…

My Absolute Favorite Place- SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center)

Cut out of a state park north of Albany, NY, SPAC has been my favorite outdoor venue for years. Good acoustics, great setup, and just a flat out awesome place to see a concert, SPAC offers up everything you want in an outdoor venue.

I have never had a bad experience on any level from traffic flow, to tailgating, to my seats. Everyone I have deal with there has always been great from security to any of the staff, I can’t say a negative thing about them. Saratoga is a hot spot during the summer because of the horse track, so it can get a little pricing staying in a hotel around the area, but down town Saratoga during the summer offers up a vibrant nightlife.

While most of their shows are usually Orchestra or Ballet, SPAC always offers up an array of concerts mixed in. To see their schedule this season, click here.

Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band, O.A.R., and a few other national acts will take the stage this summer, I highly recommend making the trek to see one of the shows.

What is your all time favorite venue?

Technorati Tags: Favorite Concert Venue, SPAC, Dave Matthews Band, Allman Brothers Band, O.A.R.

Post from: Jam Band News

My Favorite Concert Venues- Number 2

Concert Venues

With the summer music season in full swing, I was discussing with my friends what our favorite venues were. Plus it has my favorite bar in California, Old Kings Road, which used to have the best jukebox ever until it was replaced with a digital downloading one. (I don’t know if I can emotionally recover from that.)

The bowl is surrounded by residential housing, so the concerts don’t run late and you have to be very mindful of how you act around the venue. My best advice is to park downtown and take a cab to and from the venue, then go out after the concert and enjoy their Spanish style downtown.

I really like the atmosphere at the venue, it just feels relaxing, when you add the view in, you just feel so removed from your everyday life. The acoustics are good, the people are friendly, the only real negative is getting in and out of the venue, which can be tedious at times.

Thier concert season is rather eclectic this year, with a smattering of different genres, click here for their 2007 schedule.

What is your favorite city to see a concert in?

Post from: Jam Band News

My Favorite Concert Venues- Number 3

Concert Venues

With the summer music season in full swing, I was discussing with my friends what our favorite venues were. Our discussion ran the gamut from stadiums to amphitheaters to small clubs, with everyone chiming in on what they liked and why.

I figured that I would share a few of my favorites and have you share a few of yours. To give this some sort of build up I decided to do it top five style here were the previous four:

5) The House of Blues (Hollywood)
4) Wiltern Theatre

and now for number 3..

My Favorite Bar Venue- Water Street Music Hall (Rochester, NY)

Water Street Music Hall is a small venue that holds less than 1,000 people in Rochester, NY. National and local acts play here and it was the first venue that I really fell in love with, I saw Matthew Sweet here in high school and have been back to a lot of shows since.

A long bar on the left hand side makes it easy to get drinks, the sound is good, and the venue can get jammed packed with passionate fans. My favorite thing to do is get there early and get on the balcony which overlooks the stage. I wouldn’t even call it a balcony really, it is like an expanded cat walk, set back from the main stage by less than a few car lengths. If you can get up there and just sit looking down on the stage you are guaranteed an amazing viewing experience.

The crowds always seem much more lively than the various LA clubs and bars I have been to in the last few years. The only thing I really don’t like about the experience is that parking can be a major pain the ass, especially during the winter.

As far as acts go the club varies from national acts, up and coming bands, and local artists, to get a run down of their upcoming events click here.

What is your favorite bar to see a band in?

Post from: Jam Band News
