A Primer On: Widespread Panic

A Primer On: Widespread Panic

I wanted to start a feature up called “A Primer On” giving you relevant information and links to different bands. Personally I know that I will hear about a band, listen to a band occasionally, and not really know their full history. The goal of this is to expose you to a band and have all the information about them at your fingertips.

Random MySpace Band Review: Roots of Creation

Random MySpace Band Review: Roots of Creation

Band: Roots of Creation

MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/rootsofcreation
Website: http://rootsofcreation.com
Classified as: Reggae/Jam Band/Dub
If you only have time to listen to one track listen to: That’s How Strong My Love Is
Being the blunt and honest person I am when I see Reggae and Dub listed with a bunch of white boys playing it the first thing I think about it that it is going to be a really crappy Sublime type sound.  When I came across Roots of Creation’s page I had to admit that was the preconceived notion I had of them before even listening to one of their songs.
But when I listened …read more

Archive.Org Download of the Week- Ben Kweller

Archive.Org Download of the Week- Ben Kweller

I first heard about Ben Kweller on the independent radio station WBER, they were playing his single “Wasted and Ready”. Kweller, was formerly a member of Radish an alternative rock band that had broken up in the late nineties after releasing one album and had moved on to a solo career in the folk, acoustic, indie rock vein.
When I saw Kweller open for Ben Folds, play a solo acoustic set I was blown away, he really was excellent in concert and I enjoyed most of his songs. He had the crowd going from the get go as he played “BK …read more

My Least Favorite Venue

My Least Favorite Venue

Recently I completed a series on my favorite concert venues, as with the good there is always the bad. I wanted to take a second and write about my least favorite concert venue. Not that I want to kill the fun and good times vibe around here, but I figure we have to look at the underbelly once and awhile.
So without further adieu, my least favorite concert venue.
Darien Lake-

Formerly a Six Flags theme park, Darien Lake is the the worst concert venue I have ever set foot into.
It is the prime spot for summer music stops for Western, NY because …read more

Greatest Hits Albums: Good Sampler or Giving People What They Already Should Know?

Greatest Hits Albums: Good Sampler or Giving People What They Already Should Know?

I was talking to one of my friends the other day and we began to discuss greatest hits albums. The discussion started out with us talking about certain greatest hit albums that it seems like everyone owns: Bob Marley “Legend” was settled on as the prime example.
Soon we began to talk about the merits of the greatest hits collection as an introduction to a band. My friend was arguing that a greatest hits collection is like a sampler platter, you get a good overview of an artists career, giving you the songs you should know by them. It is enough …read more

Random MySpace Band Review: People of Earth

Band: People of Earth

MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/peopleofearthmusic
Website: N/A
Classified as: Jam Band/Funk/Bluegrass
If you only have time to listen to one track listen to: Smoother Than Usual
People of Earth have a self described sound that is influenced by “funk, jazz, disco, bluegrass, improvisation, and up to four part vocal harmonies.” Which leads to an inventive and imaginative mix, that I was just plain old fun to listen to.
“Smoother Than Usual” was the first song that I heard from them and you can without a doubt see the funk and disco influence on their music. This song was a fun jam that I …read more

In the era of mashups and what not I still think this is one of the weirder yet more entertaining of the ones.

Archive.org Download of the Week: The Disco Biscuits

Archive.org Download of the Week: The Disco Biscuits

This weeks offering is the Disco Biscuits in what has so far been one of the best reviewed shows I have seen on archive.org.
The consensus in the reviews was that this was the best show from 2003-2006, and in some of their forums this is discussed as well. I am not a super Disco Biscuits fan, I haven’t listened to them enough to really talk about them but I really did appreciate this show and learned to like this band that much more. In fact I am in the process of ordering some tickets for an upcoming show before I …read more

The Countdown to Burning Man is On

The Countdown to Burning Man is On

Glide Magazine did a feature about Burning Man which sets off at the end of August.
I never realized that Burning Man was not considered a music festival, that they had no central booking committee. Any band that plays basically sets up their own stuff and creates their own camp or stage, it isn’t anything that was booked by the actual people that run Burning Man.
Personally I don’t know how interested I would be in attending Burning Man, I would lean much more heavily towards Bonnaroo or other festivals. While Burning Man comes off as an interesting social experiment I don’t …read more
